D.C. Gets an “Eargasm” with Natalie Stewart: My Show Recap and Interview with “The Floacist”

On a cold and rainy Tuesday night, Efn Lounge was definitely the place to be. Tucked away in downtown Washington D.C. is where you’ll find one of the most intimate little lounge spots.

The words were flowing  and poets were showcasing their talents for She Scene’s Entertainment’s,  weekly Happy Hour and special event, “Eargasms: Unheard Words for the Soul”, a spoken word event benefiting the D.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence which featured some of the best local spoken word artists together with Grammy Award Nominated recording artist, Natalie “Floacist” Stewart. Each poet delivered an alluring show ranging from enlightening to comical, interactive to a total soliloquy.

After having the luxury of absorbing these talented artists’ words, Natalie “The Floacist” Stewart emerges on stage in a blue graphic tee, skinny jeans, and baby pink sneakers and immediately the crowd was engaged. She went from joking about the stage light: “This is a serious light ya’ll…the light might usher me to the other side…” The sound of her melodious voice sent the crowd into fits of squeals and whistles, and the occasional “I love you”. Very interactive, and to say the least, hilarious, she even taught the crowd a song her grandmother used to sing her about valuing yourself: “Don’t get carried away. Don’t be the entertainment…check yourself, take care of yourself.” The most beautiful thing about it all is that she’d had a family emergency, yet she still felt it was her destiny to be right there for her fans.

(We stood near a pool table on the upper level of Efn Lounge, where my interview with Natalie begins. As she leans in to answer my questions, she accidentally knocks my glass of red wine over onto herself. She jokes about it, and requests a napkin. She has such a beautiful spirit.)eargasm_final1

Dayna: Natalie, what inspires you?

Natalie: You might want to turn to a blank page in your little book there, I’ve got a lot! Being happy inspires me. The responsibility of finding my center…people…art…my grandmother…possibility…dreams…I’m inspired to be in inspiration!

Dayna: That’s such a beautiful way to put it. And with all of that inspiration, what projects are you working on?

Natalie: My album, “Freedom”

Dayna: Do you have afloacistlive favorite track?

Natalie: The ENTIRE ALBUM because of the process. I expanded artistically in my expression…but I will say [the track] “Genesis” is very important…very important.

Dayna: How do you stay so strong when constantly in the spotlight?

Natalie: Well, the challenge was coming  OUT of it…I’m always seeking it. I always wanted to share something…but it’s really about personal study…doing better.

Dayna: And I’m all about random questions…so if you could be any animal in the world, what would you be?

Natalie: (smiles brightly) A DOLPHIN! I think I was a mermaid in my past life. Or a tiger. They are the only big cats that swim. But I love all animals.

Dayna: Did you know that dolphins are the only animals that ha–

Natalie: HAVE SEX FOR PLEASURE?! YES DARLING, THAT IS WHY THEY ARE AT THE TOP OF THE LIST!

Dayna: (laughs) Well, I love animals too and in my past life, I was a hummingbird.

Natalie: Oh I LOVE hummingbirds.

Efn Lounge offered the perfect getaway from the stresses of school, work, and life in general. Each guest got the opportunity to just let go of their inhibitions and absorb the knowledge of these talented performers, and possibly even make a change in their own lives with this newfound inspiration.  If you’re ever in the Washington D.C. area, take a stop by She Scene’s Weekly Happy Hour, “Tempting Tuesdays”, each and every Tuesday from 6-11pm at The Efn Lounge.
