There is no doubt that 2009 has been a year of monumental challenges and setbacks yet also one of historic celebration and progress.  We have witnessed the election of the first black President of the United States but also mourned the untimely loss one of the most iconic and legendary pop stars of our generation. While the LGBT community continues the fight for marriage equality rights across the nation and we rejoice the recent legalization of gay marriage in our Nation’s Capital; we also confront challenges that hit beyond ethical and religious differences as more troops are sent to the Middle East and unemployment rates remain at a staggering high level.

By the 365th day of the year, many of us felt  that our glasses had gone dry - having endured tough times, tragedy, loss  and dreams deferred but the beauty in all “firsts” comes in its symbolism; one of renewal, rejuvenation and resolution.  We all have areas of our lives that seek improvement and this new year, for me personally involves taking risks, moving beyond complacency and not becoming content with dreaming dreams but to dive courageously into making them a reality.

As you scroll through the stories in this edition, I hope you are not only motivated to take an honest assessment of what this renewal means to you but also feel encouraged to confront the areas that may have fallen short of your expectations and acknowledge that now is your time. Whether you are struggling with the coming out process,  professional advancement, going back to school, or improving your overall self and relationships with others, remember this new year has refilled your cup with the ambition to make the necessary changes to become a better “you”. Happy New Years from your friends at GayGirlsGuide and all the best in everything that you do!

Ciao,
